Recess!!!!
Sung Hwan Bobby Park and Max Walker bringing their unique talents and perspectives to the forefront. Their collaborative efforts and mutual support add an extra layer of significance to the event, fostering a sense of community and creative synergy. Sung Hwan Bobby Park's exploration of queerness and identity in modern society, particularly within the context of Korean military service, promises to challenge and provoke thought. Walker's emergence onto the art scene is recent, with a successful debut collection in Wellington late last year that demonstrated fresh and innovative approach to art and design. His ability to resonate with a wide audience speaks to the relevance and accessibility of his work.
The concept of ‘Recess’ where Max's jewellery is placed on Sung Hwan's vessels or sculptures, is rich with a ritualistic symbolism. This interplay between objects and themes not only enhances the visual experience but also deepens the conceptual significance, inviting viewers to contemplate notions of ancestry, ritual and relationships. ‘Recess’ is poised to make a significant impact on the art scene in New Zealand, showcasing the craft and innovation of these incredible emerging talents, while fostering a sense of unity and celebration within the community.
박성환 Sung Hwan Bobby Park is an artist based in Tâmaki Makaurau. He is the 2023 recipient of The Arts Foundation Springboard award and some recent works from his installation 'BTM 제사상 Ancestor Rite Table' at Studio Toi have been acquired by the Auckland Museum. He has exhibited in solo and group shows across Aotearoa since first working with clay in 2016 and has quickly established his signature art forms and unique point of view. Through his clay works, he expresses the experience of being queer in the Korean military as well as exploring this modern time, where there is freedom to be himself. His Smoke Scape series symbolises being Asian through meditative ritual and the importance of individuality.
Max Walker's first Auckland show following his successful Wellington debut ‘I LOVE MY MUM’ late last year. His work expresses a youthful and fresh sensibility with technical skill to create truly collectable jewellery pieces. Hand crafted in Wellington, NZ
