This walking tour celebrates the lesbian and LGBTQ+ spaces and community places on and around K’Road. These spaces were at the forefront of what has been described as ‘the golden era’ of Auckland’s nightlife and club scene centered on K’Rd amongst a vibrant and dynamic subculture. Community organisations important to our communities based themselves on K’Rd to be close to who they were advocating and working for. This walk tells stories of the era before the gentrification of the inner city suburbs like Grey Lynn and Ponsonby and before K’Rd’s seedy, wild reputation got cleaned up. These were safe spaces, sometimes the only safe space in their lives where past generations of our communities could be their authentic selves and where lesbian women and LGBTIQ+ people were able to survive and thrive. We know that if we do not actively document the heritage of the spaces and places frequented by lesbian sapphic women they will disappear without a trace, the memory of them gone and forgotten. This is true for all queer heritage – our stories need to be found, then constantly told, acknowledged and enjoyed. And through their stories you will meet an unapologetic radical community of beautiful, handsome, diverse, political, loud and proud lesbian sapphic womxn, women, womyn who came before and live today in our queer lesbian communities. You will be able to find connections and ask questions about a rich vibrant heritage, and know you are not alone and never have been. By remembering and sharing the herstory of K’Rd - who we were, where we played and what we did – we celebrate our personal and collective spirit and honor those who came before.
